Over the course of 7 years, “Tides” has been illustrated on 12 different guitar bodies. Each similar in composition but with a slight variation in lines and colour scheme. “Tides” was predominantly drawn on TL shaped bodies, but has made a few appearances on ST and D. Sonic-type shapes. “Tides” was first drawn on a TL body in 2019. Initially I didn’t give what I wanted to see much thought, but I knew I wanted to reimagine what it felt a road trip my family and I took in the early 2010s (around the mid-eastern USA). This road trip involved getting lost, getting stuck at a rest station, and sleeping on picnic tables watching cloud formations and their lightning strikes. It was as if the landscape was like the stage, and the clouds danced as the performers–exclusive for us to see. We were lost, but that felt like a good kind of lost, and a lost that resulted in a happy accident. So for “Tides” (2019), I took a rag and some water and dragged the colours around until the composition–for lack of a better term–worked, and then I followed it up with some outlines to define some of the shapes I saw during the cloud storm. Basically, like the road trip, “Tides” was a ‘mistake’ that became a sort of ‘happy mistake.’
